THE WINE
Vinha Grande White was the first white wine ever made by Casa Ferreirinha. This intensely aromatic, truly elegant wine demonstrates just how good the fine white wines of the Douro Valley can be - delicious blends of fascinatingly individual local grape varieties.

TASTING NOTES
Vinha Grande White 2014 is bright lemony-yellow in colour. It has a complex aroma dominated by pear and melon, peach and apricot, with light floral notes and subtle, very well-integrated oak. It had good body, and balancing acidity that gives it attractive freshness, with pear and melon fruitiness again and creamy oak. The finish is long and harmonious.

HARVEST YEAR
2014 was atypical in terms of weather. It was a particularly rainy year, with a very unsettled, cool summer, featuring two heat waves, one in early summer and another at the beginning of autumn. Two months were of particular note: January was exceptionally warm, while august was cooler than the average for the last 30 years. The weather during these two months helped to advance the vegetative cycle. By the end of the ripening period, levels of sugar, acidity and phenolic compounds in the grapes were very good and well balanced. Picking began during the first days of September. From the middle of the month onwards there was a bit of rain, so that even greater care had to be taken with choice of grapes in both vineyards and winery in order to maximise wine quality.

WINEMAKING
Grapes of carefully-chosen varieties grown at Quinta do Sairrão in the uplands of the Cima Corgo were hand-picked and selected for quality and ripeness both in the vineyard and on arrival at the winery. They were destemmed and gently crushed in a pneumatic press. The skins were left to macerate in the juice in order to extract precious aromatic precursors, an important element of great white wines. The must was then gently pressed and transferred to french oak barrels to finish its fermentation, with bâtonnage (stirring the flavoursome "lees" or yeast sediment). The wines were left to mature for about 8 months.

MATURATION
Subsequently, after innumerable tastings and careful selection, the final blend was made. It was clarified and bottled, and then further aged in bottle before release.

STORE
This wine can be drunk with great pleasure in the 5 years following the vintage, so long as the bottle is kept on its side in a cool, dry place at somewhere between 12ºC-15ºC, protected from light.

SERVE
It does not need decanting. Open it ideally a little while before serving to allow it to "breathe" and "open up" and show at its best. Serve chilled to between 9ºC-11ºC.

ENJOY
Casa Ferreirinha Vinha Grande White 2014 is an ideal wine to serve alone before a meal, or to accompany fish or seafood dishes, salads, pasta dishes or even poultry.
